Configure the SMTP server settings

You can configure the settings that servers use to connect to the SMTP server. You can also configure the return email address that appears in emails sent by the servers in the enterprise.

If the primary SMTP server is unavailable for any reason, servers in the enterprise connect to the secondary (or backup) SMTP server.

Procedure

  1. Go to System Management Module that allows performing suite-wide system management activities from a single, Web-based application, the Enterprise Manager.. Under Enterprise, select Settings.

  2. In the Installations tree (left pane), select the Enterprise node.

  3. Click Enterprise Settings.

  4. In the SMTP section, configure these fields:

    • Encrypt SMTP (StartTLS) - Select this option to encrypt email using the Start Transport Layer Security (StartTLS) protocol.
    • SMTP Server - Specify the IP address or DNS name of the servers in the enterprise used to connect to the primary SMTP server.

    • SMTP Port - Specify the port on which the primary SMTP server listens for connections from the servers in the enterprise.

If Encrypt SMTP (StartTLS) is selected, enter the port that is configured on the SMTP server that uses standard StartTLS encryption. Typically, this is port 587.

If Encrypt emails with TLS is selected, enter the port that is configured on the SMTP server for TLS traffic. Commonly used SMTP ports for TLS are 587 465, or 2525.

    • Secondary SMTP Server - Specify the IP address or DNS name servers in the enterprise used to connect to the secondary (or backup) SMTP server.

    • Secondary SMTP Port - Specify the port on which the primary SMTP server listens for connections from the servers in the enterprise.

    • Return Email Address - Enter the return email address to appear in emails sent by background processes running on the servers in the enterprise.

    • Use Authentication - Select this option if you want the servers in the enterprise to authenticate when they connect to the SMTP server.

If you select this option, also enter the Username and Password of the account that enterprise servers use to authenticate when connecting to the SMTP server.

  5. Click Save and Apply to Children.

  6. Check the System Monitoring, System Monitor, Alarm Dashboard screen for new alarms that indicate it is necessary to restart services. If these alarms appear, restart the services indicated by the alarms.

Alarms indicating that services must be restarted sometimes do not appear in the Alarm Dashboard until several minutes after you have saved the Enterprise Settings changes.
